Martinsville Bulletin: Martinsville bands look for help to pay travel costs

MARTINSVILLE – The concert and jazz bands from Martinsville High School recently won big at a band festival in Tennessee's Dollywood theme park.

Competing against other bands from northern Virginia and Pennsylvania, the concert band performed three pieces and the jazz band performed two. The jazz band won first place at the band competition and the concert band placed third.

“I am excited that our band students were recognized for their outstanding performance at the festival,” said band director Brian Joyce. “The students worked extremely hard putting the program together and I am so proud of them.”

Several students told Joyce that the competition was their first experience visiting the Volunteer state.

“I think it’s good to take students to perform in places outside of our area,” Joyce said. “They get a chance to experience performing in outstanding performance halls, parade routes and seeing what other bands across the country are like. Performance trips outside of our area expose students to both musical and non-musical experiences and builds memories that last a lifetime.”

While the trips help students expand their view of the world, they come with a price.
