Dr. Ronald Carrier has served the New College of Virginia well, and he
deserves the community's thanks for his innovative plans for the college.
On Wednesday, The Harvest Foundation announced that Dr. Carrier had
fulfilled his mission of designing a college that would be unique in
Virginia. It was time, he said, for others to come in and take those plans
to the next level towards becoming a reality.
Foundation officials said this was the natural evolution of the project as
it passes from a concept to a design to a campus. It also was the logical
time to create a board, called the New College Planning Commission, to
find Dr. Carrier's successor and address the issues of creating a college.
The makeup of the commission speaks to its mission. It includes respected
business and Harvest Foundation representatives, current and retired
officials with three of the largest universities in the state, and local
officials and residents, with advice and counsel from a former governor.
This is an impressive group of people who, we believe, have the
experience, the contacts and the political skills to deal with the
challenges that lie ahead.
This community should be standing behind this commission as it takes the
college to its next level.
