The Smith River Sports Complex will be open to the public on July 1, officials announced Tuesday.
The complex, which is off of Irisburg Road in Henry County, has been under construction for several months. Its $8.7 million construction cost was funded by The Harvest Foundation.
A grand opening for the complex is planned for Aug. 23, with a rain date of Aug. 30, according to a news release from the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority, which manages the complex.
On July 1, the complex will be open from 7 a.m. until dusk. Walking trails, picnic shelters and the playground will be open, and athletic fields, a meeting room and picnic shelters will be available wih reservations, the release said.
The complex has five tournament-quality, 125 yard by 75 yard fields, two with synthetic surfaces and three with Bermuda grass. It also has lighting, a pavilion with meeting space and restrooms, a concession building and paved parking.
Several events are scheduled at the complex in July. They are:
€ July 9, Southwest Virginia Recreation and Parks Society meeting;
€ July 6-10, UK International Soccer Camp; July 12, Rich Acres Christian Church picnic;
€ July 13-17, Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp;
€ July 25-26, Rumble by the River 6v6 Adult Soccer Tournament; and
€ Adult pick-up soccer every Tuesday and Thursday night beginning at 6:30 p.m.
