Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia State and Radford universities met the June 1 deadline for submitting formal proposals for how they would transform the center, said Eugene P. Trani, the retired president of VCU who is leading the initiative. He said GMU withdrew from consideration last week.NCI, which now offers degree-completion programs, is seeking a parent institution so that it can convert to a campus of a four-year public university to serve residents of economically hard-hit Martinsville and Henry County.
Trani said the boards will choose the proposal that offers the greatest benefits for the community in terms of academic programs, community outreach and economic development.
While there is no firm deadline for a decision, he said he hopes one will be made by the end of the summer so that the proposal can be submitted to the 2012 General Assembly for approval.
