Editorial: College support is impressive

October 28, 2004

Martinsville Bulletin

October 28, 2004

As Chairman of the Harvest Foundation, I believe it is important to take note of all the public officials, civic leaders, businessmen and women, citizens, and mostly the young people of our community who testified on behalf of the New College concept.  This is a rapidly developing, bold new model of higher education being crafted by Dr. Carrier and his team for our community.  However, it is something that requires more than the work of just experts.  Although we have no idea what SCHEV may recommend or what the General Assembly or Governor may decide, the powerful arguments and compelling personal stories told yesterday certainly, I believe, will mean a lot.

Although we don?t know what the future may bring with respect to the New College of Virginia, I am proud to live in a community where my neighbors were willing to speak out so articulately and forcefully for something new and innovative that has the potential to benefit all of us and our children.

There will always be challenges in our future but when our community comes together, I can remain nothing but optimistic.

Respectfully

Donald R. Hodges
Chairman
The Harvest Foundation
