First-grade classes at Patrick Henry Elementary School recently made earth-friendly planters by shredding newspaper and adding water to create a pulp, then molding it into squares in which they planted flower seeds.
The students also built mini “landfills” in plastic juice bottles, depositing food scraps, dirt, coffee grounds, leaves, plastic, metal, rubber and paper, to see how well different items decompose. The landfills will be dug up closer to Earth Day.
