The SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County received the 2015 Nonprofit of the Year Award during Thursday’s 7th annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit at New College Institute, organized by Harvest Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Henry County & Martinsville and the Martinsville Area Community Foundation.

Nicole Harris (right), executive director of the SPCA, accepted the award from Harvest Foundation President Allyson Rothrock (left).

“We are humbled and amazingly blown away. Winning this award has been like going to Disneyland for us,” Harris said. “Each year we go up on intake, just the sheer numbers of animals we handle, but we seem to match that with combative outcomes. It’s been a challenging year. We’ve had hoarder cases, emergency rescues, and natural disasters we’ve supported, along with running the shelter. But the staff has performed beautifully. It just shows the spirit of a mission-driven organization.”
