An opening date for a new Henry County Elementary School likely will be altered due to an unexpected financial issue, the Henry County School Board learned at its meeting Thursday.
Meadow View Elementary School had been expected to open in time for the 2017-2018 school year, however the time frame has shifted to the middle of that school year because of high minimum bids on the project, according to Directorof Facilities Maintenance Keith Scott.
The project will be sent back out for bids in mid- or late-May with a mid- or late-June cutoff date.
"It’s not ideal. We don’t like pushing back the opening, but we had about a four million dollar problem," Dr. Jared Cotton said.
Although it is possible that the new project could still be over budget, even with new bids, Cotton assured the public that the members of the Board "will get as close as we can get."
Two suggestions to cut costs are to bid the sewer line separately and change the aesthetics of the back of the building. However, the design still includes a full size gym.
