The New College Institute (NCI) will seek outside help in determining its future.
NCI’s board voted on Wednesday to ask the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to present "recommendations and alternatives" for how the institute should evolve, as well as positive and negative aspects of each.
Potential options mentioned by NCI Associate Director/Chief Academic Officer Leanna Blevins, who is serving as the institute’s interim executive director, include becoming a branch of a public university, partnering with area community colleges and private universities or becoming a branch of a private university.
Also, NCI must consider whether it wants to offer classes toward all four years of regular collegiate study or remain a so-called "two-plus-two" school into which students transfer to take their second two years of courses toward a degree after taking their first two years at a community college, Blevins said.
