MARTINSVILLE-Exactly how many jobs are available in Martinsville and Henry County?

According to Chris Pope, manager of the Virginia Employment Commission’s (VEC) Martinsville office there were 1,271 open positions in Martinsville and Henry County as of Monday. That’s 131 less than the estimate given at last week’s Martinsville City Council meeting.

It’s not that people aren’t applying for the jobs. It’s that more positions are coming open as others are filled. In fact, through the end of July, the Martinsville Virginia Employment Commission office had logged more hires than any other in the state. The office’s program year runs Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, he said, and their goal for this year was 600 hires. So far, they have logged 794 confirmed hires with one month to go.
