MARTINSVILLE – City public schools officials are upset at Martinsville City Council’s decision Tuesday night to table their request for $666,759 that they did not spend in the previous fiscal year to be reappropriated for them to use in the current budget year.
Having to deal with some unexpected happenings, school officials maintain they need the funds to balance the schools’ budget for fiscal 2017, which started July 1 and runs through June 30.
The council already promised them the money, according to Superintendent Zeb Talley and Martinsville School Board Chairwoman Joan Montgomery. Mayor Danny Turner on Wednesday denied that.
In Tuesday night’s 3-2 vote, the council tabled the request until its next regular meeting Jan. 10 to give members time to analyze information they received earlier in the day on city finances. The members also indicated they want the two new council members who will join the panel in January to be involved in making the decision.
