Mission Statement:  To interpret Virginia's natural heritage within a global context in ways that are relevant to all citizens of the Commonwealth.

As the state's museum of natural history serving the entire Commonwealth and beyond, VMNH has award-winning exhibits, ground-breaking scientific research and collections, and innovative educational programs for all ages.  With its outreach education programs, online resources, and traveling exhibits and displays, the Virginia Museum of Natural History is truly an institution without walls.  

VMNH is a member of the Southeastern Museums Conference and the Association of Science-Technology Centers, and is accredited by the American Association of Museums, a distinction earned by fewer than 5% of U.S. museums.  

Grants Awarded to Virginia Museum of Natural History:
May 8, 2008 $ 215,350 over 3 years to establish a Children and Nature Network and environmental education laboratory at VMNH that will serve as a clearing house for environmental information - nature-based learning, use nature as a way to stimulate learning and development opporutities.
Aug 6, 2005 $ 1,089,000 over 1 year to help pay for exhibits in the museum's new building set to open in January 2007 and for costs associated with launching the new museum. This grant also will be used as matching funds to raise an additional $1 million from private contributors and an additional $2 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Aug 26, 2003 $ 37,995 over 1 year for a science education program for children and teachers from local schools.
