For the Children Partners in Prevention, Inc., or For The Children as it is commonly known, is an organization created to help reduce the high rate of teenage pregnancy in Martinsville and Henry County. It was founded in 1997. At that time Martinsville had the second highest teenage pregnancy rate in Virginia. Since its inception, For The Children has pursued its commitment to decrease the number of un-planned pregnancies in the community. In 2003, For the Children served over 200 men and women ranging in age from 14 to 29 years. The organization’s services include: education of youth and adults on the potential risks of teenage pregnancy; classes designed to promote the development of healthy families; alcohol, tobacco and drug use prevention programs; job readiness workshops; family counseling and support programs; mentoring that provides job skills to unemployed parents; and the Fatherhood Initiative, aimed at helping young fathers cope with and support their families.
