Success By Six
United Way's Success By Six has been integral in producing a stable environment for children in the community after school and over the summer. One of Success By Six's greatest successes has been: providing emergent literacy and child development workshops to 234 caregivers, training 32 home child care providers in the use of the Ages and Stages developmental assessment questionnaire to help them identify developmental delays in children in their care, establishing a hiome provider sharing network through which a group of home providers meet monthly to discuss issues and concerns, develop monthly curriculum, and exchange educational tools for use with the children in their care. As a result of these efforts, caregiver knowledge of emergent literacy and child development matters has increased considerably. For example: 85% of participants increased their knowledge and skill base, 98% of participants stated that the information provided in workshops was useful to them, and 98% of participants recommended Success By 6 to other caregivers. In several instances, parents were able to use the information provided by Success By 6 workshops to identify potential developmental delays in their children. In each case, early identification of developmental delays led to successful intervention; one child, who was diagnosed as autistic, will soon be integrated into mainstream school as a result of early and successful intervention efforts.
